Vistal Golf Club Case Study

A green golf course surrounded by desert vegetation, cacti, and hills under a partly cloudy sky at sunset.

At Vistal Golf Club in Phoenix, hard irrigation water, desert soil and drought created extreme bicarbonate, sodium and sulfate levels that threatened its TifDwarfBermuda USGA greens. ProPlus® Aqua-pHix® Spray Formula was applied with regular flushing to amend the hard water, reduce pH and flush salts and bicarbonates from the soil. Electrical conductivity, sodium and sulfate dropped sharply on test greens, improving water infiltration, drainage and nutrient response while reducing puddling and saving water on the greens. With a proprietary, self-buffering acid formulation that requires half the volume of a leading competitor, Aqua-pHix manages hard water and highly alkaline soils two times better than the competition.

Key Points

  • Arizona’s Vistal Golf Club faced extremely hard irrigation water, desert soil and drought, producing very high bicarbonate and sodium levels that once nearly killed its greens and created some of the highest sodium levels in the city.
  • ProPlus Aqua-pHix Spray Formula was applied twice at seven gallons per acre with evening flushing, then approximately every month at five gallons per acre to amend hard water and flush unwanted salts and bicarbonates.
  • On green number one, EC fell from 2.6 to .77 mmhos/cm, sodium from 560 to 230 ppm and sulfate from 430 to 51 ppm; green number eight dropped from 7.5 to .67 mmhos/cm, sodium from 370 to 230 ppm and sulfate from 180 to 37 ppm.
  • Lab titration tests showed Aqua-pHix required half as much product as a leading competitor to reach target pH and bicarbonate levels and is described as more effective than any other spray acidifier on the market and the most cost-efficient treatment available, proven safe for people, equipment and turf and offered in granular, spray or fertigation formulas.
