Eagle’s Nest Golf Course, Toronto Case Study

Golf course at sunset with long shadows stretching across the green, flagstick in the center, trees and blue sky with clouds in the background, and the sun low on the horizon.

At Eagle’s Nest Golf Course near Toronto, construction exposed more than 100 acres of steep, sandy dune slopes, threatening erosion, water quality and nearby wetlands. Flexterra® FGM® was chosen over cellulose mulch, rolled erosion-control blankets and conventional bonded fiber matrices to provide a high-performance, easy-to-apply solution. Applied with seed and fertilizer at 3,000 pounds per acre across 85 acres of the steepest dunes, Flexterra delivered erosion protection over winter and during severe thunderstorms, rapid germination in 4 to 6 days when moisture was available, and more even turf establishment even after a six-week drought.

Key Points

  • Eagle’s Nest needed cost-effective erosion control on more than 100 acres of long, steep sandy dune slopes to protect sensitive wetlands and wildlife habitat.
  • Flexterra FGM combines chemical and mechanical bonding with crimped interlocking fibers that absorb up to 50 percent more water and hold up to 15 times their weight in water.
  • Future Green applied Flexterra with seed and fertilizer at 3,000 pounds per acre, treating 85 acres of the steepest dunes and secondary roughs using a 1,500-gallon hydro-seeding unit.
  • Extensive testing and field results show Flexterra can provide immediate and extended erosion protection for up to one year and up to 20 percent better germination than excelsior and straw blankets.
