In Collie, Western Australia, a former Black Diamond Coal Deposit pit was reshaped and revegetated to address serious safety issues and highly erodible slopes. The Collie Shire and partners reshaped the pit walls to 26-degrees and tested the soil, which showed depleted conditions, minimal organic matter and an acidic pH of 4.4. Profile® recommended the ProFlex™ System—combining ProGanics® Biotic Soil Media™ (BSM™), Flexterra® HP-FGM® and Liquid Lime—to improve soil conditions, control erosion and establish vegetation. Despite public interference, vegetation was successfully established and inspections three years later showed sustained growth exceeding expectations.
Key Points
- Former mine pit with highly erodible soils (167 tonnes/ha/year; 74 tons/ac/year), minimal topsoil and 1V:2H slopes posed safety and landslide risks.
- Soil tests revealed depleted soils with an acidic pH of 4.4 and minimal organic matter.
- ProFlex™ System applied: ProGanics® BSM™ at 5,000 kg/ha (4,460 lb/ac), Flexterra® HP-FGM® at 4,000 kg/ha (3,570 lb/ac) and Liquid Lime at 10 L/1,000 m2 (10.7 gal/ac).
- Vegetation established despite public traffic, with government-pleasing results and sustained growth confirmed three years after application.
