Beating Shrink: New Trials Proving Benefits of Mixing HydraFiber® and Nutricote®

Two potted plants with lush green leaves and clusters of white flowers are displayed against a black background. The plant on the right is larger and fuller than the one on the left.

New trials from Profile® Horticulture Solutions show how combining HydraFiber engineered substrate with Nutricote® controlled-release fertilizer can help growers reduce shrink by delivering higher-quality plants with improved shelf life. Using six popular annual and perennial varieties, mixes with Nutricote at 2, 4, 6 and 8 lbs./y3 are being compared to a 125 ppm nitrogen water-soluble fertilizer program from transplant through post-retail. Early results indicate higher nutrient levels, better foliar tone and flower color, and superior visual quality in HydraFiber with Nutricote plants, especially as post-production time increases. These improvements can support better sell-through, stronger consumer satisfaction and an improved bottom line.

Key Points

  • Trials blend HydraFiber advanced substrate with Nutricote® controlled-release fertilizer to improve plant quality, shelf life and help reduce shrink.
  • HydraFiber mixes with Nutricote at 2 lbs./y3, 4 lbs./y3, 6 lbs./y3 and 8 lbs./y3 are compared to an industry standard 125 ppm nitrogen water-soluble fertilizer program.
  • Researchers track nitrogen levels in leaf tissue, pH, electrical conductivity, photography and qualitative plant health ratings at retail ready and in the weeks following.
  • Early results show higher nutrient levels, better foliar tone, flower color and overall visual quality, leading to better point-of-sale quality, sell-through and an improved bottom line for growers.
